Article 11—NEO•GEO CD PROMO VIDEO (1994)

“Image is NOTHING…GAMEPLAY is everything.” So begins this VHS promo video for

the Neo•Geo CD system. My love for the Neo•Geo is based on the mystique of early games like The Super Spy, Crossed Swords and Blue’s Journey, but this video only features five newer games: Art of Fighting 2, Super Sidekicks 3: The Next Glory, Samurai Shodown II, The King of Fighters ’94 and Fatal Fury 3: Road to the Final Victory. I don’t think it does a very good job of demonstrating the variety of the available game library; it’s just a bunch of people beating each other up and playing soccer!

If you can make it through the first minute or so without blinking, you might catch a few tantalizingly brief glimpses of the Neo•Geo booth at an unidentified trade show,

probably in Japan. There are also scenes from a special event where the CD system was being promoted; look for guys in green “Neo•Geo CD Live Tour” jackets, handing out plastic bags with the Neo•Geo logo on them.

I don’t recognize any of the tunes in the video, though. They have Neo•Geo-style pick harmonics, orchestra hits and big drums, but they’re missing the familiar Neo•Geo “Sphero Symphony” effects and that vaguely ominous Akira Takasaki-meets-Minamoto no Yoritomo-at-the-pachinko-parlor vibe that characterizes the best Neo•Geo soundtracks. If you’re a Neo•Geo nut, you’ll know what I’m talking about.
